Knowledge, Memory, and Social Relations: Intergenerational Communication in Florentine Family Books (working title)

Family books functioned as a medium of intra-family and intergenerational communication in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, primarily serving to preserve knowledge and experience. Ideally, this knowledge was passed down from the father to the male heir and formed part of a social practice through which urban elites sought to affirm and maintain their social status (cf. Studt 2007).

My doctoral project focuses on Florentine family books from the late 13th to the 15th century, which occupy a unique position at the intersection of mercantile literacy and familial record-keeping. The project pursues two main objectives: First, it analyzes the communication strategies employed by the authors, with particular attention to the extent to which these books served as instruments of tradition and memory formation both within and beyond the family. Second, it explores how social relationships were perceived, represented, and integrated into the authors’ self-understanding. The analysis also includes the material dimension of the manuscripts (such as format, binding, and script) as well as their conditions of storage and transmission. It assumes that material aspects were not merely passive carriers of content, but actively shaped and participated in the communicative function of these books.
